The Basics of Lip Filler – Finding a Provider

When it comes to Dermal Filler Treatments of any kind, it is important to take the time to discuss your options with an experienced and certified dermal filler injector. 

This means, seek out a professional who provides you with proof of certifications, is willing to show you before & after successes, and whose name either starts with “Dr.” or ends with “R.N”. 

Take your time, schedule a consult, and do not be afraid to ask any and all questions that come to mind. 

Stay away from the fast food version of dermal fillers and spring for the steak house. 

Now is not the time to cut corners – We are talking about your face!

How Long Does a Lip Filler Appointment Take?


It is no surprise that we are asked quite often about the aftermath of Lip Filler.

Appointments for Lip Filler are on average 30 minutes, however if it is your first time, it may be somewhat longer. 

This time would include having before photos taken, speaking with the Doctor or Nurse about your expectations, numbing the area and then having the filler placed.  

The lips have somewhat sensitive skin, so many find it is slightly more painful than the average Botox injection.

What Happens After Lip Filler?

Sensitive skin means swelling will come easily, but after the first 72 hours, you will find you have seen the worst of any unseemly aftermath. 

This also means that you may have bruising, however it will subside after 48 hours. 

Your medical professional will most likely want to wait 2 weeks for a follow up visit, so that the filler can be completely settled and the full effect can be seen. 

What is the Most Common Misunderstanding About Lip Filler?

The most common misunderstanding regarding lip fillers, is actually thinking that your professional made a mistake and over-puffed your pout. 

You may think that your lips are far too big from what you and the doctor or nurse had discussed. 

Good news? You most likely don’t have anything to worry about! 

Try to remember that although the initial swelling went down, it can take up to a week to see the full effect of the filler making a home in your new smile. 

So don’t give in to the urge to panic the next day assuming something is wrong.  Time heals all swelling!

What Can I Expect After Lip Filler? 

Just like with any type of dermal filler, you should avoid laying down for at a minimum, 4 hours. 

This will help minimize the chance of the filler migrating to unwanted areas of the face, or even just to another section of your lip. 

You should also follow the same rules about not working out for 24 hours after injections. 

Flushed skin will increase your chances of bruising, and sweat on open skin, even on the smallest of points, can lead to infection. 

I’m A Filler Pro – Are Lip Fillers Any Different?

Your new lips require a little more extra care than the average Botox injection aftermath you are most likely use to. 

Most obvious, but most commonly forgotten, your lips look temping right after treatment, but sorry! 

Tell those boys to keep the smooches at bay for 24 hours.  

Aside from the fact that you may be submitting your injection sight to unnecessary germs, the amount of muscles used when stealing a kiss, are far more than you realize. 

You may unknowingly shift the shape of your lips that seemed so desirable. 

What else should you look out for? 

It’s best to keep the toasts of the mock-tail variety for now. Alcohol acts as a blood thinner. 

This can increase your likelihood of visible bruising, swelling, and inflammation. 

Not to mention, alcohol can really dehydrate you! One of the benefits of Lip Filler is that your lips will be far more moisturized. 

Hyaluronic acid, a main ingredient in lip filler, is also naturally found in the body. 

Dehydrating yourself means altering the actual compound of the filler. 

Smoking has been shown to increase your risk of infection after getting lip fillers, so it should be avoided. 

Smoking also causes your lips to pucker, which can apply pressure on the lips and be painful after injections. 

Try to avoid smoking for at least 24–48 hours after getting lip fillers.

Regardless of the type of filler or treatment areas such as the lips, chin, jawline, or cheeks, here’s your comprehensive guide to ensure you have a smooth dermal filler treatment experience and maintain optimal results.

What To Do And Not To Do Before Your Dermal Filler Appointment:

What To Do and Not To Do 1 Week Prior To Your Dermal Filler Appointment:

  • DO: Ensure your provider is certified and experienced in dermal fillers.
  • DON’T: Take blood thinning over-the-counter medications such as aspirin, Motrin, ibuprofen, and Aleve.
  • DON’T: Use any waxing, bleach, or hair removal cream on the area to be treated with dermal filler.
  • DON’T: Take supplements like garlic, vitamin E, gingko biloba, St. John’s Wort and omega-3 capsules. as they may cause bruising.

What To Do and Not To Do 2 Days Prior To Your Dermal Filler Appointment:

  • DO: Adhere to any specific instructions provided by your practitioner.
  • DON’T: Use topical products such as tretinoin (Retin-A), retinol, retinoids, glycolic acid, or other any “anti-aging” skincare products.

What To Do and Not To Do 24 Hours Prior To Your Dermal Filler Appointment:

  • DO: Drink plenty of water leading up to your dermal filler appointment.
  • DON’T: Drink alcoholic beverages 24 hours prior as it may increase your chances of bruising.

What To Do and Not To Do After Your Dermal Filler Appointment:

6 to 10 hours After Your Dermal Filler Treatment:

  • DO: Apply ice to the area to minimize swelling.
  • DO: Use extra pillows to keep your head elevated while sleeping to reduce swelling.
  • DON’T: Touch, rub, scratch, massage, or pick at or around the injection site as this can cause irritation, sores or possible scarring.
  • DON’T: Apply makeup or lipstick to the treated area to avoid infection.

The Days Following Your Dermal Filler Treatment:

  • DO: Stick to a gentle skincare routine and avoid any aggressive treatments or products for a few days post-procedure.
  • DON’T: Drink alcohol as it may result in additional bruising.
  • DON’T: Partake in strenuous exercise in the first 24 hours and avoid excessive sweating.
  • DON’T: Use makeup for 24 hours after treatment.
  • DON’T: Use a sauna or have excessive heat exposure for 3 days after treatment.
  • DON’T: Use of Retin-A or similar products (ex. Kinerase, Tazarac) 2 days after treatment to avoid increased irritation or redness.
  • DO: Postpone dental procedures for at least 2 weeks after treatment.
  • DON’T: Have the following cosmetic treatments done for at least 2 weeks after treatment:
        • Lasers, including BBL, Clear + Brilliant, or Laser Hair Removal
        • Chemical Peels
        • Hydrafacials

Dermal Fillers: Types of Fillers and Tips To Follow Before Your Treatment:

Tips To Follow Before & After Your Dermal Filler Treatment

Before your dermal treatment, you should avoid:

 

● Blood thinners and pain relievers (Aspirin, Motrin, Ibuprofen, Aleve, etc.)
● Supplements (St. John’s Wort, Gingko biloba, primrose oil, garlic, ginseng, and Vitamin E)
● Any type of hair-removal process on the treatment area (waxing, bleaching, tweezing, etc.) at least 3 days before your treatment
● Alcoholic beverages for at least 24 hours before your treatment

 

If you suffer from or have a history of cold sores, let your doctor know before your procedure as you should be aware that any needle punctures could contribute to a risk of another breakout or eruption of cold sores, reactivating the herpes virus.

 

If this concerns you, your doctor can prescribe antiviral medication to avoid or clear up any breakouts before your treatment.

 

Do not use dermal fillers if you are pregnant, breastfeeding or allergic to any ingredients.

 

You should arrive at the office with a clean, makeup-free face.

Following Your Dermal Filler Procedure

After your dermal treatment, you should avoid:

● Wearing makeup for at least 12 hours
● Using skincare products for at least 24 hours
● Strenuous exercise for at least 24 hours
● Alcoholic beverages for at least 24 hours
● Extensive sun, heat or UV exposure for at least 24 hours
● Extremely cold or hot temperatures for at least 48 hours
● Touching or massaging the treated area
● Smoking and/or smoke exposure
● Any dental procedures for at least 2 weeks

 

To minimize swelling and bruising, apply ice on the treated area and take Arnica or Bromelain (eating fresh pineapple may help as well).

 

Tell your doctor if you are planning any laser treatments, chemical peels, or other procedures after treatment, or if you are using Aspirin, Ibuprofen, or other blood thinners as this may increase bleeding or bruising on the treated area.

 

If you have a big event coming up, it is recommended that you plan your treatment at least 3 weeks in advance for optimal healing and results.
