Dermal Fillers: Types of Fillers and Tips To Follow Before Your Treatment:

Whether you want to look years younger or enhance your features, a dermal filler treatment is a great option to achieve your desired look without surgery.

In fact, the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery reports that dermal filler treatments were a runner-up for the most popular non-surgical procedures last year, right after Botulinum Toxin (Botox, Dysport, Xeomin).

Most areas of the face can be treated with Dermal fillers.

There are many different types of dermal fillers on the market to choose from:

1. Hyaluronic Acid (HA)

Juvederm Ultra, Juvederm Ultra Plus, Juvederm Volbella, Juvederm Vollure, Juvederm Voluma, Perlane, Restylane, Restylane Silk, Restylane Refyne, Restylane Defyne Boletero Balance.

Hyaluronic Acid is a naturally occurring substance found in your skin that helps it stay hydrated and plump.

These temporary dermal fillers are FDA approved for treatment on the nasolabial folds (smile lines), lips, vertical lip lines, marionette lines and cheek areas.

HA fillers last between 6 months to 2 years before they are absorbed by the body naturally.

Sculptra lasts up to 2 years and is used to fill in laugh lines, plump up thin lips, and treat deep nasolabial folds.

4. Polymethyl-methacrylate (PMMA)

Bellafill

Bellafil is a semi-permanent FDA approved dermal filler made of a synthetic, biocompatible substance.

This filler lasts up to 5 years and can be used for deep wrinkles, nasolabial folds, increase volume in the lips and to fill out pitted acne scars.

How do you select the right dermal filler? It’s best to schedule a consultation with a reputable Board Certified Doctor or Registered Nurse.

Tips To Follow Before & After Your Dermal Filler Treatment

Before your dermal treatment, you should avoid:

 

● Blood thinners and pain relievers (Aspirin, Motrin, Ibuprofen, Aleve, etc.)
● Supplements (St. John’s Wort, Gingko biloba, primrose oil, garlic, ginseng, and Vitamin E)
● Any type of hair-removal process on the treatment area (waxing, bleaching, tweezing, etc.) at least 3 days before your treatment
● Alcoholic beverages for at least 24 hours before your treatment

 

If you suffer from or have a history of cold sores, let your doctor know before your procedure as you should be aware that any needle punctures could contribute to a risk of another breakout or eruption of cold sores, reactivating the herpes virus.

 

If this concerns you, your doctor can prescribe antiviral medication to avoid or clear up any breakouts before your treatment.

 

Do not use dermal fillers if you are pregnant, breastfeeding or allergic to any ingredients.

 

You should arrive at the office with a clean, makeup-free face.

Following Your Dermal Filler Procedure

After your dermal treatment, you should avoid:

● Wearing makeup for at least 12 hours
● Using skincare products for at least 24 hours
● Strenuous exercise for at least 24 hours
● Alcoholic beverages for at least 24 hours
● Extensive sun, heat or UV exposure for at least 24 hours
● Extremely cold or hot temperatures for at least 48 hours
● Touching or massaging the treated area
● Smoking and/or smoke exposure
● Any dental procedures for at least 2 weeks

 

To minimize swelling and bruising, apply ice on the treated area and take Arnica or Bromelain (eating fresh pineapple may help as well).

 

Tell your doctor if you are planning any laser treatments, chemical peels, or other procedures after treatment, or if you are using Aspirin, Ibuprofen, or other blood thinners as this may increase bleeding or bruising on the treated area.

 

If you have a big event coming up, it is recommended that you plan your treatment at least 3 weeks in advance for optimal healing and results.
