Semaglutide vs. Tirzepatide

Tirzepatide vs semaglutide

Tirzepatide and Semaglutide are two medications used for the treatment of type 2 diabetes, and more recently for weight loss.

The two drugs belong to different classes of drugs and have some differences in their mechanisms of action, dosing, and efficacy.

Healthy Solutions Medspa offers both of these medications for those in our weight loss program.

What is Semaglutide?

Semaglutide is a GLP-1 receptor agonist.

It works by mimicking the action of the endogenous hormone GLP-1, which increases insulin secretion, decreases glucagon secretion, slows gastric emptying, and promotes satiety, resulting in improved blood sugar control and weight loss.

In much simpler terms, Semaglutide makes you less hungry due to increasing insulin secretion and your blood sugar control is improved, causing you to lose weight.

Semaglutide is FDA approved to treat type 2 diabetes under the brand names Ozempic, Wegovy, and Rybelsus.

However, only Wegovy has approval for use in managing weight.

What is Tirzepatide?

Tirzepatide works by stimulating the release of insulin and inhibiting the release of glucagon, leading to improved glycemic control and decreased blood sugar levels.

Tirzepatide is sold under the brand name Mounjaro.

Similar to Semaglutide, this medication makes you less hungry and aids in weight loss.

What is the Difference Between Tirzepatide and Semaglutide?

While tirzepatide targets both the GLP 1 and the GIP receptor agonist, semaglutide only mimics the GLP-1 receptor agonist.

This gets released by your gut after you eat to signal to the brain that you are full.

Are They Both Efficient?

Both tirzepatide and semaglutide have been shown to reduce weight for patients who are overweight or obese in randomized controlled trials.

Are They Both Safe?

Both tirzepatide and semaglutide are generally well-tolerated, but they may cause side effects such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and injection site reactions.

How Do I Know Which is Right For Me?

The choice between Semaglutide and Tirzepatide  medications depends on individual patient factors, including treatment goals, preferences, and tolerability. It is important to consult with a healthcare provider to determine the most appropriate treatment option for each patient.

You have probably heard by now about Semaglutide or the new weight loss shot!

It’s all over the news and so many celebrities who lost a lot of weight quickly have admitted to taking Semaglutide while others have denied it.

At Healthy Solutions Medspa in Bucks County, PA, we have been providing weight loss services for over 10 years now with Dr. Luciano and are experts in all things medical weight loss.

So, we are about to answer some very popular Semaglutide questions for you.

How does Semaglutide help you lose weight?

Semaglutide is a medication taken via a self administered injection prescribed by a Doctor which increases the amount of insulin that is produced by the pancreas, while also decreasing the amount of glucagon produced from the liver.

These two things happening in the body after the injection will cause a reduction in hunger, while also increasing energy levels. This produces weight loss.

It was proven by the FDA that adults taking these Semaglutide injections lost an average of 20% of their body weight.

How is the Semaglutide injection administered?

Semaglutide is meant to be injected into the body once weekly.

It can be injected with a small needle into the stomach, thighs, or upper arm at any time of day and it can be taken with or without food.

What are the side effects of taking Segmaglutide for weight loss?

The side effects of taking Semaglutide may include GI issues, nausea, anxiety, upset stomach, and vomiting, but most people have little to no side effects, especially if starting at a small dose.

There are many different weight loss medications and injections on the market right now.

Mounjaro, Wegovy, Saxenda, and Trulicity are some of the medications on the market available that can help people lose weight.

How much does Semaglutide cost?

Some insurances cover brand Semiglutide medications like Wegovy or Ozempic depending on the patient’s plan and the patient’s diagnosis.

If the patient’s insurance does not cover Semaglutide, at Healthy Solutions Medspa, we offer compounded Semaglutide that comes in three doses, starting at $75 and increasing as the doses increase.

How do Semaglutide shots and the Coolsculpting Elite Treatment compliment each other?

When patients lose weight, they often inquire about the Coolsculpting treatment. The Coolsculpting Elite treatment is able to reduce stubborn fat from the belly, love handles, thighs, double chin and more. So, when patients have areas of fat that they just can’t get rid of at they gym or through diet or medications, this non-surgical treatment works really well to get them to their body goal.
