Regardless of the type of filler or treatment areas such as the lips, chin, jawline, or cheeks, here’s your comprehensive guide to ensure you have a smooth dermal filler treatment experience and maintain optimal results.
What To Do And Not To Do Before Your Dermal Filler Appointment:
What To Do and Not To Do 1 Week Prior To Your Dermal Filler Appointment:
- DO: Ensure your provider is certified and experienced in dermal fillers.
- DON’T: Take blood thinning over-the-counter medications such as aspirin, Motrin, ibuprofen, and Aleve.
- DON’T: Use any waxing, bleach, or hair removal cream on the area to be treated with dermal filler.
- DON’T: Take supplements like garlic, vitamin E, gingko biloba, St. John’s Wort and omega-3 capsules. as they may cause bruising.
What To Do and Not To Do 2 Days Prior To Your Dermal Filler Appointment:
- DO: Adhere to any specific instructions provided by your practitioner.
- DON’T: Use topical products such as tretinoin (Retin-A), retinol, retinoids, glycolic acid, or other any “anti-aging” skincare products.
What To Do and Not To Do 24 Hours Prior To Your Dermal Filler Appointment:
- DO: Drink plenty of water leading up to your dermal filler appointment.
- DON’T: Drink alcoholic beverages 24 hours prior as it may increase your chances of bruising.
What To Do and Not To Do After Your Dermal Filler Appointment:
6 to 10 hours After Your Dermal Filler Treatment:
- DO: Apply ice to the area to minimize swelling.
- DO: Use extra pillows to keep your head elevated while sleeping to reduce swelling.
- DON’T: Touch, rub, scratch, massage, or pick at or around the injection site as this can cause irritation, sores or possible scarring.
- DON’T: Apply makeup or lipstick to the treated area to avoid infection.
The Days Following Your Dermal Filler Treatment:
- DO: Stick to a gentle skincare routine and avoid any aggressive treatments or products for a few days post-procedure.
- DON’T: Drink alcohol as it may result in additional bruising.
- DON’T: Partake in strenuous exercise in the first 24 hours and avoid excessive sweating.
- DON’T: Use makeup for 24 hours after treatment.
- DON’T: Use a sauna or have excessive heat exposure for 3 days after treatment.
- DON’T: Use of Retin-A or similar products (ex. Kinerase, Tazarac) 2 days after treatment to avoid increased irritation or redness.
- DO: Postpone dental procedures for at least 2 weeks after treatment.
- DON’T: Have the following cosmetic treatments done for at least 2 weeks after treatment:
- Lasers, including BBL, Clear + Brilliant, or Laser Hair Removal
- Chemical Peels
- Hydrafacials
