What is Cellulite?
Nearly all women struggle with some form of cellulite. The appearance of dimpled skin commonly occurs on the buttocks, thighs, and abdomen. However, women can develop cellulite on their upper arms and breasts, as well.
Despite what some may believe, cellulite is not directly correlated with your lifestyle. Cellulite occurs in more than 90% of women, regardless of body shape or size. Instead, scientists believe hormones trigger cellulite.
The Physiology of Cellulite
Within the dermis, fibrous bands of collagen known as fibrous septae connect the skin to underlying muscles. The septae partitions the lobes of fat located in the sub-dermis, or the third layer of skin.
Cellulite forms when these bands of fibrous septae thicken and shrink. The deformity causes the fibrous to tug down where it attaches to the skin. The tension of this action causes lobes of fat to protrude around the septae. This leads to the dimpled appearance associated with cellulite.
